Can one person make an impact on the world even if their life was tragically cut short at age 17? Of course, and we can show you in the faces and art work created by 12 young Youth Art scholarship students this year alone...Elisa Older(seen in photo above with her artwork) only tread this earth for a short while but her legacy lives on in each scholarship that we give out.
Elisa took a workshop back in 1996 here at the school that culminated with the mural you see on the outside of our building today. All the students in this workshop had some part in the creation of this mural. Shortly after taking this workshop Elisa was killed in a drunk driving accident.
Her grandmother, local artist Pat Christianson, and her mother, helped create a scholarship in memory of Elisa. This year our newly re-launched Youth Art Program allowed us to give six full scholarships valued at $200 each from the Older Scholarship fund. The other six students were funded by the Carol Peralta Scholarship. Carol's life was cut short by a brain tumor in 2004 but her family also created a scholarship for youth in her memory. Carol's memory also lives on in each scholarship given out.
Won't you help us replenish these scholarship funds by donating to our Youth Art Scholarships? To do so you can call us, 1 866 678 3396 or send us your tax deductible contribution to PNWAS, 15 N W Birch Street, Coupeville WA 98239 and write "Youth Scholarships" on the note line. Or better yet, stop by and visit our newly decorated and expanded Gallery and see Elisa's work up close and see the work by all the other Member artists, including some of our youth art work.

Even though we have blogged about this opportunity...it certainly is worth repeating. Join us on the grounds of the historic and charming Captain Whidbey Inn on June 30th from 3-5 p.m. for an extraordinary plein air demonstration by our faculty member, Mitch Albala. Watch Mitch "create" before your eyes and explain the elements of a good plein air painting. $20 gets you this mini session, the beauty of this Madrona log Inn perched over scenic Penn Cove and the company of likeminded folk! Invite your off-island artist friends to share this experience with you..they can dine and lodge at the Inn...Mitch only has two spots left in his July workshop.....

Got our first donation to our Youth Art Scholarships since we launched our campaign to replenish them! Thank you Mike McConnell. Mike sold a large piece of his art...which by the way can be viewed not only here at the school but also at Coupeville Coffee and Bistro, and promptly gave us a donation. It is artists and art lovers alike who make our scholarship program thrive.
We gave out 12 scholarships to students this year. This was a huge accomplishment but can only continue if supported...any amount makes a difference. Perhpas you may be helping educate the next artist of the century... We hope you attend this coming week's Exhibition of our Youth Art Students on Thursday, June 14 from 6-7 p.m. here at the school...15 N W Birch Street, Coupeville, WA .

Have you noticed the explosion of photography workshops being offered these days? Well we have and have been talking to our faculty about it. Here is the general concensus. There are many photo jouranlists now looking to re-invent themselves as print media is on the decline and the accessibility of digital photography has opened many doors for photographers.
However a word of caution when out there shopping for a workshop...you get what you pay for. Would you rather take a workshop from one of our highly acclaimed photography instructors with 30 years teaching experience coupled with our 26 years experience offering workshops or would you rather take a workshop from someone without the credentials and life experience of a total of 56 years experience?
While you ponder this we ask you then to consider the following faculty we have for you in 2012 and beyond:
Sam Abell, Arthur Meyerson, Robert Stahl, Craig Tanner, John Shaw, Bobbie Goodrich, Brenda Tharp and the list goes on....I know which workshop and which school I would choose...
