Working in Series with Jane Davies

Hi.  Jane Davies here.  So glad to be guest posting on this blog!

Like many artists, I work out ideas through a series of paintings, rather than individual pieces.  The series format helps me focus on process, and not get too precious about any one piece.  It helps me keep in the flow of art-making.  I am not concerned about whether the resulting pieces "hang together" or not.  I use the series as my process, which is why my class (May 31 - June3) is called "Abstract Painting: Series as Process".  Here is a little video of the development of one piece, the first in a series, in which I talk a little bit about my inner process as I work:

This shows some of the sequence of the piece.
This is almost finished, but I need to let it sit for a while, and do many more.  This is 10"x10".

The piece in the video is loosely related to this series. You can read more about this series and see some of them in process here.  These are 10"x10".
Take a look at Abstract Painting: Series as Process, and if you can't make it to the workshop, I hope you'll enjoy working on your own series.  It's FUN!!  I will be giving a slide presentation on Monday, June 1, 5:00 - 6:00 pm, on The 100 Drawings Project.  It is free and open to the public.

MEANWHILE, I have a GIVEAWAY for one lucky winner.  I'm offering a set of Golden Fluid Acrylics!  Ten 1-oz bottles of fabulous, intense color.

All you have to do to enter into the drawing is comment on this blog post.  Identify yourself uniquely ("Mary in Minnesota" not just "Mary", for example), and then go to my blog on Thursday, February 5, where I will post the winner.  If Lisa lets me, I may post it here as well, but will definitely post the winner on my blog. Good luck.  And keep making art!

  6. Thanks for another great video, Jane. I'm not a painter and I'm learning a lot from your process. I'm still trying to understand the idea of making something and then covering up most of it! I'm having trouble 'getting it'. I'd like to try these paints on fabric. Thanks for the giveaway.

Another great video Jane. Inspiring, and demonstrates the importance of working freely to see what eventuates, keeping the art/design journey open ended. I teach design to secondary level and often show your videos to my students to help them be less precious with their design generation. Thank you for the chance to win the Golden acrylics which I would love to share with my students.

  27. Hi, I'm Kris in Iowa. I loved this video! It reminded me that I can work on a piece until I'm *not quite done*, set it aside, and work on other similar pieces. Setting a piece aside and then looking at it alone and next to its siblings helps inform where the 'unfinished' piece wants to go. Great info! :)

  74. I laughed when, in the video, you were tearing up the blue strip and it tore some if the paint next to it and you said it created something interesting. A lot of people would be upset they had torn something they didn't mean to! You have such a positive attitude toward experimenting as you go, as part of your process. It didn't bother you to cover up completely most of the initial collage elements. I like how you said "The series format helps me focus on process, and not get too precious about any one piece." This is what I need to learn, and not be worried about whatever precious thing (paint, image, collage element, set of marks) I have on the page already, and just be willing to roll right over them with different paint. I'm learning that right now in your online drawing class. Thanks for sharing more about your process!!

  137. Hi Jane -

Thanks, and thanks again for everything you share with such generousity!

Being a professional painter myself, I can honestly say that your online courses and tutorials are the most inspirational I ever experienced!

I simply love your 'hypothesis' and the way you choose to focus upon process rather than a 'finished product'!

Impossible to get 'stuck' after watching you for a while!

I have always had an issue about being too 'serious', not really being able to open up fully to the playfullness.
Thus I am deeply grateful to have been able to receive tons of inspirations from watching YOUR playfulness.

It feel like concrete walls around me are cracking all over, and the light and colours are cascading in. (don't know if this is 'correct' english, though :-)).

It feels like Indian Summer; getting a new chance, thanks to you and your amazing talent as an artist and as a tutor!

So happy I stumbled upon you out there on the w.w.w.!

    All the best,

    Esmeralda from Norway:-)

  169. Hi Jane,
Thanks for posting this great video clip. Last fall I took a 10-week class from Fiber Artist Lisa Call which focused on the value of working in a series. That class truly changed my way of thinking and I now try to work in-series as much as I can. This latest video of yours was wonderfully inspirational. Thanks! LibbyWilliamson -former student of yours at Art and Soul...from So. Calif.
